The Bird Road Art District was originally an industrial area by the railroad tracks, the area began attracting artists in the 1980s; slowly rows of slanted warehouses were converted into individual artist studios and soon the artists began organizing open studios inviting the public to view their artwork. By the year 2000, the area was officially designated an art district by Miami-Dade County.
During the summer of 2010 a group of artists came together to organize the Bird Road Art Walk, an event created to revive interest in the area and provide more visibility to participating artists, galleries and creative businesses'.
Today the Bird Road Art District continues to attract creative types and is the home to a thriving community of more than 20+ artists and an up and coming art scene, featuring a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums as well as a mix of art schools, alternative spaces, a live theater group, music stage and Speak Fridays! a stage for spoken word that happens every Friday night.
